Powerful new storytelling tools are at the disposal of journalists. News sites can now easily provide access to raw records and documents that bring credibility and depth to their reporting. Web applications let readers customize data to reflect their own situation and create a personal narrative. Better, many of these programs are free, equipping small operations with the same power and impact as major media outlets.

This story started out as an investigation that no one else was pursuing, and then overnight became a story that almost everyone wanted. Because of that, there were two distinct dynamics, and I learned that what works in one story does not work in every story.
