Bastian Obermayer

Bastian Obermayer, Germany, works as deputy head of the investigative unit of the Munich-based Süddeutsche Zeitung.

He is the reporter who received the Panama Papers from an anonymous source. Obermayer is also author of several books, among them the best-selling account of the Panama Papers investigation: The Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money that he co-authored by his colleague Frederik Obermaier. The book has been translated to 16 languages and was published in almost 50 countries.

Obermayer's other book cover the sexual abuse of boys in Catholic boarding schools, a big manipulation affair inside the German automotive realm (ADAC) and the experiences of German soldiers in the war in Afghanistan. Obermayer worked from 2005 until 2012 for the magazine of Sueddeutsche Zeitung, specializing in long form and investigations. In 2012-2013 he moved to the newspaper and coordinated the team of Sueddeutsche Zeitung in the ICIJ projects Offshore Leaks, Luxembourg Leaks, Swiss Leaks and Panama Papers.

He has received numerous honors for his work, including the 2017 Pulitzer Prize, the George Polk Award, the Barlett & Steele Award and several important German awards.
