Biography

Ms. Sara Ganim

  • Member of the 2012 winning team, Local Reporting category
  • Metro-Reporter of The Patriot-News

Sara Ganim is a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter for The Patriot-News in Harrisburg and a contributor to CNN.

She was born in Detroit, raised in Ft. Lauderdale and fell in love with journalism as a high school freelancer with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. She stumbled into crime reporting at The Daily Collegian at Penn State, and since then has always had a passion for covering crime and the courts. The challenge of reporting on such sensitive subjects and intricate cases was a major advantage in breaking the story about Jerry Sandusky, and the instinct to approach it as a crime story, rather than a sports story, helped The Patriot-News stay ahead of coverage when the scandal became national news.

Ganim, who has had both print and broadcast jobs, is always a big proponent of multi-platform reporting and using social media in every story. She sees that change in newsrooms as a positive -- something that makes for better, more efficient and more diverse reporters. In her spare time she enjoys speaking to aspiring college journalists about how to maximize their skills and use youth as an advantage to get into this business during tough economic times.
