Mr Damon Winter
Damon Winter, 34, recently joined the staff of the New York Times in May 2007 after working for three years as a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times He has previously worked for The Dallas Morning News, Newsweek, Magnum Photos as well as The Ventura County Star and Indianapolis Star. Damon has covered a broad range of stories including conflicts in Israel and Afghanistan, 9/11 in New York, the Olympic Games and feature stories in Vietnam, Cuba, Russia and India among others. Damon was born in New York and grew up in St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. He studied at Columbia University in New York where he received a Bachelor's degree in environmental science. Damon has won awards from World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year (POYi), Society of News Design (SND), NPPA Best of Photojournalism, APME, and was named the NPPA Region 8 Photographer of the Year in 2002 and the California Press Photographer of the year in 2006. He has been featured in the Communication Arts Photography Annuals 2001-2005 and was the subject of a feature profile in May/June 2005. His photo essay on sexual abuse victims in western Alaska was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography and was part of a portfolio that earned the National Journalism Award for Photojournalism that year. His coverage of Barack Obama’s historic campaign for the presidency was awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Feature photography.
